How to Enter Numbers, Text, Date and Time, Series using Auto Fill

Auto Fill is a useful feature in Microsoft Excel that allows you to quickly fill a series of cells with a sequence of numbers, dates, or other data types.

To use the auto fill option in MS Excel with the menu, follow the steps below:
  • Select the cell or cells that you want to fill with a series of values.
  • Click on the "Home" tab in the Excel ribbon.
  • In the "Editing" group, click on the "Fill" button.
  • From the drop-down menu, select the type of series you want to use. For example, you can select "Series" to fill the cells with a linear series of values or "Days" to fill the cells with a series of dates.
  • In the "Series" dialog box that appears, enter the starting value for the series and the increment or step value, if applicable.
  • Click on the "OK" button to apply the series to the selected cells.
The auto fill option in Excel can also be used to fill cells with other types of data, such as

Numbers:
To enter a series of numbers using Auto Fill, simply type the starting number in the first cell of the column or row, then drag the fill handle (the small square in the bottom-right corner of the cell) down or across to fill the cells with the series. You can also double-click the fill handle to fill the cells down to the last non-blank cell in the column or row.

Text:
To enter a series of text using Auto Fill, type the first few words in the first cell of the column or row, then drag the fill handle down or across to fill the cells with the series. Excel will automatically increment the text based on the pattern it detects.

Dates:
To enter a series of dates using Auto Fill, type the first date in the first cell of the column or row, then drag the fill handle down or across to fill the cells with the series. Excel will automatically detect the pattern of dates and fill them in accordingly.

Times:
To enter a series of times using Auto Fill, type the first time in the first cell of the column or row, then drag the fill handle down or across to fill the cells with the series. Excel will automatically detect the pattern of times and fill them in accordingly.

Series:
To enter a custom series using Auto Fill, type the first few items in the series in the first cell of the column or row, then select those cells and drag the fill handle down or across to fill the rest of the series. Excel will automatically detect the pattern of the series and fill it in accordingly.

Note that Auto Fill may not always work as expected if the pattern is not clearly defined or there are gaps or irregularities in the data. In such cases, you may need to manually enter the data or use a formula to generate the series.
