Softening and Refining Selections Photoshop 7
In Adobe Photoshop 7, you can soften and refine selections using various techniques. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
- Open Photoshop 7 and open the image you want to work with.
- Select the desired selection tool from the toolbar on the left side of the screen. Commonly used selection tools are the Marquee (M), Lasso (L), and Magic Wand (W) tools.
- Make your initial selection by clicking and dragging with the selected tool around the area you want to refine.
- Once the selection is made, go to the "Select" menu at the top of the screen and choose "Feather." A dialog box will appear.
- In the Feather dialog box, enter a value for the feather radius. This value determines how much you want to soften the edges of the selection. Start with a low value (e.g., 1 or 2 pixels) and adjust it based on your preference. Click "OK" to apply the feathering.
- To further refine the selection, you can use the "Refine Edge" feature, which is not available in Photoshop 7. However, you can achieve similar results by manually refining the selection.
- With the selection active, choose the "Eraser" tool from the toolbar (press "E") or use the "Background Eraser" tool (press "E" and hold down the mouse button) for better edge control.
- Adjust the size, hardness, and opacity of the eraser tool in the Options Bar at the top of the screen. Start with a soft brush for smoother results.
- Carefully erase along the edges of the selection, blending them with the surrounding area. You can make multiple passes with the eraser tool to gradually refine the edges.
- Alternatively, you can use a Layer Mask to refine the selection. With the selection active, click on the "Add Layer Mask" button at the bottom of the Layers panel. Then, use a soft brush on the Layer Mask to paint with black to hide parts of the selection or white to reveal them.
- Make adjustments as needed until you achieve the desired level of softness and refinement for your selection.
Remember to save your work regularly to preserve your progress. While Photoshop 7 lacks some of the advanced selection refinement tools found in newer versions, you can still achieve good results by manually refining edges using the eraser tool or layer masks.
