Need of Computer Network

Need of Computer Network

Network is an interconnected collection of many computers that can share and exchange information.

Major needs of network are:-

  • Resource sharing- using a network we can share many resources like data, Software and Hardware etc.
  • Reliability- using network we can have two or more copies of a file on many computers connected to a network. So if one of them is unavailable then we can use other computer to access the file that makes a network more reliable.
  • Reduced cost- using network we can share resources and it reduces the cost of resources. For example we can use single printer which is connected to the network for an organisation.
  • Fast communication- using network we can share and exchange information at very fast speed

Evolution of computer network

The seeds of the internet were planted in 1969 when the U.S. Department of Defense-sponsored a project named ARPANET(Advanced research project agency network). The goal of this project was to connect computers at different universities and U.S defense.

ARPANET started with a handful of computers but it expanded rapidly in the mid-80s.

Another federal agency, the national science foundation, created a new, high-capacity network called NSFnet, which was more capable than ARPANET. NSFnet allowed only academic research on its network, so many private companies built their own networks, which were later interconnected along with ARPANET and NSFnet to form the INTERNET.
