Creating a new publication
document using page maker- We
can create new publication document by using two methods
1. By using Templates
2. By using blank
publication document
1. By using Templates
a. First we need to
start page maker program by using following steps:-
Click on Start - All programs -
Adobe - Page maker 7.0 - Adobe page maker 7.0
b. Now using Templates
dialog box we can select Category according to our specification, then we need
to select template and now we can click Create publication button next to category
list box.
c. Now if any font
used by the publication template is not available in the Computer System then Font matching
results dialog box is displayed in this dialog box we can click Ok button to
confirm substituted fonts.
d. Now a Verification
dialog box is displayed and here we click Yes button to confirm the selection.
e. Now we can modify
template according to our specification and then save it.
2. By using blank publication document
a. First we need to
start page maker program by using following steps:-
Click on Start - All programs -
Adobe - Page maker 7.0 - Adobe page maker 7.0
b. Now we need
to close Templates dialog box if
displayed, then we can click File - New.
Now Document Setup dialog box is
displayed. Here we can set page size, orientation, number of pages, compose to
print options according to our specification. Then we can click Ok button.
c. Now we can see a blank publication document, and here we
can add text frames, picture frames,
tables and other drawing objects to create our publication document and then we can save it.
Master page
Master page is a template layout that contains basic design elements such as header, footer, page numbers, non-printing guides, columns, ruler and margin guides.
Creating master page
We can create new master page using following steps:
- Click Window - Show master pages
- Now master page palette will display
- Now we need to click at top right triangle icon then New master page... or press New master button located at the bottom side of the palette.
- Now a master page dialog box will appear, here we can specify Name, page margins, columns guides etc.
- Now we can click ok button
Working with master page
Opening master page
- Open the PageMaker document
- At the bottom left corner we can see an index of page icons.
- Here we can click L or R icon to select master page
Note: In Master page, What we place on the Left and Right page will appear on the other pages.
Automatic Page Numbering
If we want to add automatic page numbers then we can use following steps:
- Make sure we are working on Master page
- Now click Text tool and place it where we want to add page number
- Now press Ctrl + Alt + P shortcut key from the keyboard
- On the Left page it will show it as LM and on the Right page it will show it as RM.
Header and footer
If you want to add header at the top and footer at the bottom of each page, then we can use following steps:
- Go to Master page by clicking the Master page icon
- Use View - Zoom in command to enlarge the page view
- Go to the area where to insert the header and footer
- Select the Text tool and click and type header and footer text and format it
Frames
In PageMaker frame is a placeholder that can hold text or an image. Frames can be rectangular, round, or polygonal and we can place text or graphic inside frames, then this will take the shape of frame
For example text placed in round frame will flow to fill in the frame and an image placed in round frame will be cropped by frame.
We can insert a frame by using following steps:
- Click on one of a frame tool in the Toolbox
- Now drag it on the page
- If we want to resize the frame then we can use its sizing handles
- If we want to move frame then we can use pointer tool
Entering, editing, formatting text
Using two methods we can add text in PageMaker.
1. Typing text directly in PageMaker (useful for short passages)
2. Using Story Editor:
- Click on Edit - Edit Story or press Ctrl + E shortcut key
- Now we can type text and can format text using control palette
Now to return main document we need to click on Story - Close Story or press Ctrl + W
Now PageMaker will display warn prompt to place it or discard it then we can select desired option
After placing the story now we can resize frame as per the size of story.
Getting text via a text file / import text file (.doc, .txt, rtf, pdf etc.)
We can use following steps to import text file into PageMaker:
- Click on File - Place then select Text document and click open button
- Now select Text document and then text will import into PageMaker document
- If there is more text then a red Arrow will appear at the bottom of the frame. Now we can resize frame to fit all text inside the frame
Adding more pages
Sometimes we need to add more pages in order to place additional text. So we can use following steps to add more pages
- Click Layout - Insert pages
- Now Insert pages dialog box will appear. Here we can specify a number of pages and then click Insert button
Inserting graphics
To insert images into PageMaker document we can perform following steps:
- Click File - Place or we can use shortcut key Ctrl + D
- Now Open dialog box will appear. From this dialog we can select image file and then we can click Ok button
- Now a warn dialog will appear and ask to include a copy of selected image, then we can click Yes or No button according to our specification
- Now cursor will change into a loaded graphic icon
- Now we can click on the frame where we want to insert the image
- If image does not fit in a frame then we can adjust it manually or we can click on Element - Frame - Frame Options to adjust it inside the frame
Saving PageMaker file
To save a PageMaker file we can use following steps:
- Click on File - Save or we can use Ctrl + S shortcut key
- Now Save Publication Dialog box will appear here, if we are sending PageMaker document to be printed or edited then we need to select Files required for remote printing/All linked files in the Copy Section to make sure any fonts or graphics that are linked, are included with the file and then we can click Save button to save the publication file.
- Also we can use File - Save as to save PageMaker file.
Cut / copy / paste text
We can perform cut, copy, paste text task by using following steps:
- First we need to select Text tool then we need to place the cursor at a point and then we can click and drag a cursor to a second point
- Now we can use Edit - Cut or Edit - Copy to cut, copy the selected text to the clipboard
- And to paste cut or copied text we need to position the cursor at a required position and then Left click
- Now we choose Edit - Paste command to to paste the selected text
Threaded and Unthreaded text
Threaded Text- when we have a story that cannot fit onto one page, then we have to thread the story over several pages
- We can identify threaded text by a plus sign (+) in its top or bottom if the Plus sign is at the top then it means text is falling into this text box
- If the Plus sign is at the bottom then it means text is falling into another text box
Unthreaded text- unthreaded text is where a text stands alone without being connected to any other block.
These blocks have nothing in their top and bottom handles
Steps to unthreaded a threaded block
We can unthread a block using following steps:
- Select the block with pointer tool
- Click Edit - Cut (the block will disappear)
- Click Edit - Paste
- Now it is an unthreaded block
Steps to thread in an unthreaded block
We can thread in an unthreaded block by following steps:
- Choose Text tool and select all the text in the block
- Now click Edit - Cut
- Now click an insertion point within an existing threaded block and click Edit - Paste
