Web Browsers

Web browser- A web browser is a program that lets us visit different web sites on the Net and display their offering on our computer. There are many browsers available in the market e.g. Mosaic, Netscape Navigator, Opera, Chrome, Mac web etc. But two popular browsers Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer

Netscape navigator

Starting Netscape navigator- 

To start Netscape navigator we have to follow following steps-
  • Click at start- All programs
  • In the program submenu, click at Netscape communicator- Netscape navigator. Now we can see the Netscape navigator window on our computer screen.
Navigation toolbar- navigation toolbar offer some very useful buttons that are used for navigating.

Other controls- Apart from navigation buttons there are some other controls in Netscape navigator

Status bar- It is situated on the lower left corner of the browser. It reports on the progress of the data download.

Access indicator icon- It is situated on the upper right corner of the browser when browser retrieving data, it tells so by animating itself. If click on it takes us to Netscape home page.

Go menu- This menu lets us select a web page we have previously accessed.

Specifying Home page or start page- We can specify home page by using following steps:-

Click Edit- preferences and then select navigator. In the location box we can type the address of the web page that we want to set as a home page/start page and also we have to select home page radio button then we need to click ok button.

Loading a web page- If we want to load a web page then first we need to type URL in the location box. Then we can press enter key.
Changing text size- We can increase or decrease font size by using view menu. Also we can use shortcut keys ctrl+] to increase font size and can use ctrl+[ to decrease font size.

Printing a web page- We can print a web page by selecting file menu then we can select print option from the drop down menu
Some web pages are divided into frames if we want to print a particular frame then first we need to select it by clicking in it and then we can click the print button or also we can use only the selected frame radio button from print dialog box.

Frames- Independent sections in a web page are called frames.

Viewing a web page- we can view an HTML page by selecting open page command from file menu than we can click choose file button after that we can select desired file and then by clicking open button we can view a page by writing its url including file path and file name in the location box.

Using bookmark- if we are visited sites regularly then we can use bookmark for accessing these sites without typing their URLs.

Creating/adding a bookmark- we can create or add bookmark by using following steps
i. First go to the web that we want to bookmark.
ii. Click bookmark-add bookmark

Playing tricks with history- the location toolbar of Netscape navigator display the URLs of the pages currently displayed in the browser’s window. We can access these visited URLs by clicking at the down arrow symbol to the right of URL box. Then we can see a pull down menu of URLs and this menu shows the URLs of web sites that we have visited so far.

Viewing history list- if we want to go back to a web page that we have visited ten days ago then we can use history list. We can access history list by selecting communication – tools- history
Changing history days- by default Netscape navigator keeps pages in browser history list for 21 days. But we can change these days according to our need. We can change these days by selecting edit- preferences and under navigator category, under history option we can enter desired number of days.
Shortcut menu- when we right click at a hyperlink while viewing a web page a shortcut menu appears by using this shortcut menu we can select back, forward, stop, reload or also we can view the source code of the web page and also we can add current web page into bookmarks etc.

Viewing source code in navigator- we can view source code by using shortcut menu and also we can view source code by selecting view- page source command.

Microsoft Internet Explorer(MSIE)

Starting MSIE- we can start (MSIE) by using following steps-
  • Click at Start – All programs
  • In the programs submenu click at Internet Explorer.
Other controls- Apart from standard navigation buttons there are some other controls in MSIE. These are-

Status bar- it is situated on the lower left corner of the browser. It reports on the progress of the data download.

Access Indicator Icon- it is situated on the upper right corner of the browser. We can access Microsoft home page by using this icon.

View – Goto menu- this menu of MSIE lets us select a web page that we have previously accessed.

Specifying Start page or Home page- we can specify home page by using following steps-
First we need to click Tools menu then we can select Internet options.

Now we can see internet properties dialog box. In the general tab we can enter the URL of desired home page under Homepage address box option.

Loading a web page- we can load a web page by typing its URL in the address box of MSIE and then we can click enter key from the keyboard or can click at go button next to the address box

Printing a web page- we can print a web page by selecting Print command from the File menu or by clicking at Print button on the standard toolbar

Some Web Pages are divided into multiple independent selection called frames. We can print desired frame by selecting in it and then we can click print button or select only the selected frame radio button from Print dialog box.

Viewing HTML page- we can view a web page by typing file name along with its complete path in the address box or can select open command from File menu, the we can search the desired file on our computer by clicking at Browser button. Once we have selected desired file then we can click open button.

Using favorites- a favorite is a link to web page to have a quick and easy access to it later.

Creating/ adding a favorite- we can add a web page to favorite by using following steps-
First we need to go to the web page which we want to add to favorites.

Now we need to click on favorites – Add to favorites link from favorites menu list.
Now, it will ask to specify the name of this favorite. So we can write the name in the name field. If we want this web page to be available offline then we have to check the box make available offline. Then we can click Ok button.

Viewing History list- we can view the history list by clicking the history button on the browser’s toolbar. Also we can click view menu, then e can point to explorer bar and then we can click History link or can press Ctrl+H shortcut key from the keyboard to view the history list.

Changing history days- By default MSIE keeps pages in history list for 20 days. We can change these days by clicking at Tools- Internet option command and then under general tab, we can enter desired number of days in the box provided under history option.

Shortcut Menu- when we point click at the hyperlink then we can see shortcut menu or context menu. Then we can use following shortcut options like open, open in a new window, save target as, cut, paste, print , copy etc.

Viewing source code in MSIE- by using View- Source to. Now we can see the view source code of the web page.

Saving an Image from the webpage- we can save an image from the web page by using following steps
  • At first we need to move the cursor over the graphic image that we want to save
  • Now we can click the Right mouse button then a pop-up or context or shortcut menu
  • appears
  • Now we can click save picture option from pop-up menu.
  • Now save picture dialog box appear, now we can write the name of the image and by clicking save button we can save the image.
Multimedia- sound, video, animation and 3D videos are refers to as multimedia.

Plug-ins- Plug-ins are small software programs that extend the capabilities of the browser by enabling it to play sound and video clips or do other functions such as automatically decompressing file that we download. multimedia files often require plug-ins programs for running these multimedia files on the web page.
