Computing- Computing refers to application of a set of techniques on data and instruction to define and solve problems pertaining to a specific information-based task.
Business computing- refers to the computing applied to solve business-related problems.
Business Computing Systems- are those computing systems that are concerned with the development and management of high quality computer-based information systems.
Open source software(OSS) - OSS can be freely used but it does not have to be free of charge. They can receive payments concerning support, further development.
The most important thing is about an OSS, the source code is freely available to the customer & by using source code customer can modify OSS and redistribute without any limitation.
FLOSS- (Free libre and open source software)- FLOSS is both free software as well as open source software. Here the word libre mean freedom.
Free Software- Free software can be freely accessible and can be freely used, changed, improved, copied and distributed by all who wish to do so and no payments are needed to be made for free software.
GNU- GNU refers to GNU's not Unix. This project was initiated by Richard M. Stallman with an objective to create a system compatible to Unix but not identical with it. With time, GNU project expanded and now it is not limited to only an operating system. Now , it offers a wide range of software, including applications apart from operating system.
FSF- (Free software foundation)- It is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of supporting free software movement Richard stallman found it in 1985 to support GNU project and GNU licenses.
OSI-(Open source initiative) - It is an organisation dedicated to cause of promoting open source software. Bruce Perens and Erics Raymond were the founders of OSI, that was founded in Feb. 1998. OSI specifies the criteria for OSS and properly defines the terms and specification of OSS.
W3C- It is an acronym for World Wide Web Consortium. It is responsible for producing the software standards for WWW. W3C was created in Oct. 1994 to lead the WWW to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability.
Proprietary software- Proprietary software that is neither Open nor freely available. Its distribution and modification is not allowed or requires special permission by the supplier or vendor. Source code of proprietary software is normally not available.
